Has there been a shift in the landscape of Fantasy Football?

Filed under: Fantasy Football — Drew @ 4:16 pm

I know that there’s still plenty of football left to be played, but after recently kicking myself for drafting Shaun Alexander with the 5th pick in my draft I started to take a look at all of my leagues draft results. The top five picks in each draft were LT, Steven Jackson, Shaun Alexander, Frank Gore and Larry Johnson, in various orders. I have been playing fantasy football for almost 10 years now and the general theory behind winning a league championship has been to have a strong group of running backs. For the most part, this theory has held up. But after taking a look at the league leaders for the current season, I was amazed at the names that were at the top of the list, based on their preseason rank, and I also noticed a shift in the top fantasy position.

Here’s a list that was generated using the standard Yahoo Fantasy Football scoring system, as of this week.

Top 15 Yahoo Fantasy Football Scorers:

  1. Tom Brady(QB)
  2. Tony Romo(QB)
  3. Ben Roethlisberger(QB)
  4. Derek Anderson(QB)
  5. Adrian Peterson(RB)

Nostradamus Fantasy Sleepers - Week 2

Filed under: Fantasy Football — Drew @ 9:29 pm

Quarterback:

  • Brett Favre - The Giants poor excuse for a secondary allowed Tony Romo to throw 4 TD passes. The ole man still has something left in the tank. While all the preseason talk has been about the up and coming 49ers, if this Packers team can develop a consistent rushing attack, they will be a force this season.
  • Kyle Boller - Kyle did everything possible to win the game against the Bengals. If Todd Heap didn’t drop that TD pass, Boller would have been deemed a Hero. Tom Brady was able to pick apart the Jets secondary and faced little or no pressure. Sure the Ravens offense isn’t as high powered as the Patriots, but if you are in a pinch, Boller’s your guy.

Fantasy Football Week 1 Wrap-up

Filed under: Fantasy Football — Drew @ 10:29 pm

Well, to say that I had a bad week would be an understatement. Going into the week, I didn’t feel great about my teams. I finished 1-3. The only team that won was Team #1 as listed in my previous post, Fantasy Football Rosters. How well did your teams fair?

Here are some of my observations from Week 1:

Quarterback Busts:

  • Drew Brees - This is the leader of a Top 3 NFL offense and he only managed to put up 192 yards to go with his 2 ints. This game was played on Thursday which put many people in the hole early.
  • Damon Huard - Huard is not thought of in the same light as a Drew Brees, but he did manage to put up solid number when he was at the helm for most of last season. His 168 yard, 2 int performance against the less than stellar Houston Texans defense has to have Herm Edward wishing for Trent Green.

Running Back Disappointments:

  • LT, Steven Jackson, Larry Johnson and Frank Gore were arguably the top 4 backs of every fantasy football draft. They combined to register 181 yards, 2 fumbles, and 3 TDs. Outside of the fumbles, this was a day in the office for LT himself last year. I feel OK about LT and Gore, but I am very concerned about LJ and Jackson. The KC offense looks just a bleak with LJ as it did without him and the injury to Pace has to have a negative effect on Jackson’s production.
  • Ronnie Brown - Is it too early to label this draft class of early running backs a bust? Brown, Cadillac and Cedric Benson are not fairing to well. Brown put up an abysmal 32 yards. This is not good for a consensus 2 round pick

Wide Receivers that flew the coup:

  • Mark Clayton and Deion Branch - Did they even make the trip to the game? 0 yards.
  • Roy Williams - 20 yards and 1TD is not good for a Pro Bowl wideout. Calvin Johnson is supposed to help the offense, not just change the name on the ticket to Hawaii.

Pleasant Surprises:

  • Jay Cutler - Looks like Shannahan may have made the right decision by giving him the keys to the car.
  • Edge, Portis and Lynch - All looked the complete opposite of their production during the preseason. It would be nice to see Edge return to his Colt form.
  • Randy Moss, Ronald Curry, and Chris Chambers - Each looked like they are ready to have a big season. My expectations for Curry have been tempered a bit with the new QB concerns, but hopefully Culpepper add fuel to this fire.
  • Indy and Green Bay - Most thought that the Indy defense would suffer with all of the off season change, including yours truly, but Tony Dungy proved why his is the captain of this ship. His cover 2 defense can easily replace the corners but an injury to Bob Sanders would be a huge setback. The Packers all but shutdown the above average offense of the Eagles. This Pack D is young and could be one of the best defenses to surround Favre during his tenure.

What took you by surprise during Week 1?

Nostradamus Fantasy Sleepers - Week 1

Filed under: Fantasy Football — Drew @ 6:56 pm

Quarterback:

  • Donovan McNabb - I have seen a lot of sites rank him in the upper middle tier of quarterbacks. In my opinion, he is still amongst the elite QBs as long as he remains healthy. Green Bay will be reminded of that fact this week. McNabb has a history of big games against the Packers and this weekend should be more of the same.
  • Jay Cutler - The revamped Buffalo defense will have a tough time against Walker and Marshall. This should benefit Cutler in the first game of what could be his breakout season.

Running Backs:

  • Deuce McAllister - The matchup with the Colts is filled with key Fantasy contributors, but Reggie Bush has had a lot of hype during this off season. How many times have you seen the commercial featuring Bush and Manning? Deuce is still a very good back and should get his fair share of yardage and goal line carries.
  • Lamont Jordan - Detroit had one of the worst run defenses last season. Jordan has a chip on his shoulder and with 4 free games before his main competition steps on the field, he wants to solidify his hold of the starting RB duties. Justin Griffith leading the way through the holes is also a plus.

Wide Receivers:

  • Mark Clayton - He had a solid season last year. Historically, the third year is the breakout year for talented receivers. Maybe this is his year. The shotty Cincy secondary will not hurt his cause.
  • Santonio Holmes - Pittsburgh is supposed to run more of a wide open offense this year. With Hines Ward being more of a possession receiver at this point in his career, this will benefit the former OSU star. Cleveland’s best DB getting arrested can also lead some mental lapses in coverage.
  • Kevin Curtis - With many pegging Reggie Brown as the #1 guy in Philly, Curtis should be able to use his blazing speed to catch a bomb or two against an average Green Bay secondary. McNabb will be eager to prove that he is back.

Tight End:

  • Randy McMichael - McMichael was a great TE in Miami until he was lost during the brief Saban era. With Bennett nursing an injury and Holt not at 100%, Bulger will be able to use this weapon to expose the Panther linebacking core.

Kicker:

  • Olindo Mare - Another former Dolphin that should shine with their new team. With all of the point going around during the match up with the revamped Colts defense, plenty of kicks will be in the air.

Defense

  • Philly - Jim Johnson always pushes the envelope and playing against a quarterback that does the same usually results in plenty of opportunities for a Pick 6.

Leave These Guys on The Pine:

  • Brett Favre - Playing against a turnover happy defense with an unproven rushing attack is not good.
  • Marshawn Lynch - It will take time for his new line to gel and the improved Denver defense will make for a long day at the office for Lynch.
  • Terry Glenn - Is this the year that the torch is passed to Patrick Crayton?
