Is there really loyalty in today’s NFL?

ESPN reports that Jason Garrett will decline the head coaching offers from the Baltimore Ravens and the Atlanta Falcons in order to remain as the Offensive Coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys. I believe that this is the correct decision and one Jason should make out of a show of loyalty to Jerry Jones. Obviously, Jerry didn’t want to lose Garrett and was rumored to match any contract offer that Garrett received from Baltimore or Atlanta. I believe that Jason owes Jerry a lot for his success in the NFL and it would be a slap in the face if he left right now, when it is so apparent that Jerry isn’t ready to let him go.

Jason Garrett’s “glory” days as a player were during his time as a Dallas Cowboy serving as a backup to Hall of Fame QB Troy Aikman. Along the way, winning multiple Super Bowls. It was also Jerry Jones that plucked Jason Garrett from the Miami Dolphins coaching staff, with no established coaching credibility, and appointed him as the Dallas Cowboys’ Offensive Coordinator. At that time, there were even rumors swirling that Jerry Jones considered making Jason the Head Coach. With the success that Garrett has had during his first season in Dallas, I think that it is only “right” that he show Jerry Jones some gratitude and remain at Dallas. Of course, I am assuming that the rumors about him being Wade Phillips successor are true.

Jerry took the risk on Jason, and now he’s showing the rest of the league that there is some loyalty left in today’s NFL. Good Luck.
