Hall of Fame coach Don Shula has made some NFL headlines this week because of some comments which he alluded to having an asterisk placed next to the New England Patriots in the history books in the case that they finish the season undefeated. According to ESPN.com, he has since backed off those comments. (Read Here).
My question to you, do you think there should be an asterisk? First I must say, as good as they look, and as “soft” as their schedule appears, I will be SHOCKED if they actually pull it off. I am a firm believer that on any given Sunday, any team can win. The Patriots are just this years version of the Colts, Broncos, etc that have recently threatened to match the Miami Dolphins historical achievement.
With that said, if they do manage to finish the season 16-0, there is NO argument that can be made for an asterisk to be inserted into the record books. Think about the origin of this “idea”. A few year’s ago, Phil Jackson, coach of the LA Lakers, mentioned that as asterisk should be placed next to the San Antonio Spurs first championship because it was a strike shortened season. This, is logically acceptable, but to think the Patriots should have an asterisk, for the spygate fiasco that was squashed at the beginning of the season is just ridiculous. People this is football. The #1 team sport in the world. The slight advantage that the Patriots may have gained with this information cannot produce results without flawless execution on the field. Even so, it certainly will not win you a Super Bowl or cause you to win every game on your schedule. If it was that simple, believe me, the Patriots would not be the only team with covert sideline cameras.
So again, I ask you. Asterisk or No Asterisk?
