Nostradamus Picks - Week 2

Nostradamus

Well, I didn’t get off to a good start. I gambled with a couple of picks that didn’t pay off. Both the Dolphins and Redskins looked like they were playing for the Toilet Bowl Championship and well, Joey was Joey. Here are my Week 2 picks:

Texans vs. Panthers
Last week’s game against the Chiefs was a bit of a role reversal. The Texans looked like the team that belonged in the NFL.
The Panthers were also a bit of a surprise. They shutdown the high powered offense of the Rams and abused their lackluster
defense. Maybe since their bandwagon is virtually empty this part of the season, they can fly under the radar. I think Texans will be competitive in most of their games this year, but unless Delhomme reverts back to last year’s form, the Panthers should take this match up. This should be tougher than last weeks victory over the Rams, the Texans defense looks like the best in their franchise’s short history.
Pick: Panthers

Bengals vs. Browns
Copy-N-Paste from last week. “It’s the Browns. Until they prove other wise, that’s all the logic I need.”
Pick: Bengals

Falcons vs. Jaguars
I was shocked at the sick rushing stats that the Titans put up on the Jags. Then I saw that they ran around the edges. There is no way to run up the middle on that defense. For the Falcons to have a chance, Norwood will have to have a HUGE day and Harrington will have to protect the ball. Well, the first of those two items is possible to happen. Garrard had a good game and the Taylor/Jones-Drew combo will look to bounce back.
Pick: Jaguars

Packers vs. Giants
Wow. The Packs defense and the Giants offense looked very good. Given that the Giants have key injuries on their offense, the Pack should take this match-up. Favre has to be savoring for this game after watching Tony Romo look like Joe Montana last week. It could be one of his best games of the year.
Pick: Packers

Bills vs. Steelers
The Bills were completely stymied but the Broncos defense, but Marshawn Lynch was a welcomed bright spot. The Steelers alsohave a solid defense, but Losman should be able to make sure Lee Evans is a factor in this game. The only problem is that they will not be able to stop what appears to be a high powered Steelers offense.
Pick: Steelers

49ers vs. Rams
The 49ers comeback victory on Monday night may be a sign that this young team may be turning the corner to take back the division which it owned for over a decade. Their defense looks like it will end up being the best in the division. This game is necessary if they are going to be taken seriously as a playoff contender. The Rams laid an egg last week against the Panthers. A 0-2 start is never good, but if they play as bad as they did against the Panthers, it is inevitable.
Pick: 49ers

Saints vs. Bucs
How many people want to retract their preseason Saints in the Super Bowl statements? The Saints were picked by many to be the #1 or #2 team in the NFC. So does the Saints debacle mean that the AFC is that much more of a force? Both of these teams are coming off of disappointing Week 1 performances. Of the two, the Saints looked the most disappointing. Look for them to take out all of their frustration on the Bucs.
Pick: Saints

Colts vs. Titans
Can someone please remind the Colts that they don’t have a defense so last week they shouldn’t have manhandled arguably the #1 or #2 offense in the NFL? I guess they didn’t get the memo. Dungy plugged the many holes in his Cover 2 secondary and they performed flawlessly. If I didn’t know any better, I would think this is exact same defenders that stormed through the
playoffs last year. Somehow they will manage to contain the new Mr. All-World, Vince Young.
Pick: Colts

Seahawks vs. Cardinals
New coaching staff. Same Cardinals. Just when it appeared that the Cards may start the season with a winning record, they managed to blow a lead with less than 4 minutes remaining in the game. The lone bright spot for the Cards was the running of Edge. He appeared healthy and in good shape against a solid 49er defense. Unfortunately, for the Cardinals, the Seahawks
looked very good on defense and Alexander appears to be completely healed from his foot injury. New Year. Same Cards record. 0-2.
Pick: Seahawks

Vikings vs. Lions
Rookie of the Year candidate, Adrian Peterson, looked great against the Falcons and the Lions still have issues on the defensive side of the ball, but the Lions have a solid offense and enough vets on defense to pull off this victory. Outside of Peterson, there are many question marks on the Vikings offense. An inexperienced QB, rookie tailback, and no real receiving threat. Their defense continued where they left off during the preseason by creating havoc to generate turnovers and a score. Kitna is surely apt to give away a ball or two, but they have too many playmakers to be completely shutdown. Take the Lions in a mild upset.
Pick: Lions

Cowboys vs. Dolphins
Where’s the D? That’s what every Cowboy fan has to be wondering after they allowed Eli Manning to look like, well a Manning in last weeks surprising shootout. The Dolphins offense struggled, but that was against a stout Washington defense. This week they should have more room to operate, but in the end, the Cowboys will have too many weapons on offense to lose this
game.
Pick: Cowboys

Jets vs. Ravens
Leave up to a former Belichick coach to squeal on his old boss. He could have at least waited until the game was over. That way he would have a good excuse for why they were beat down. With Pennington hurt, ironically their offense should open up with Clemens at the helm, but the only problem is that he faces the Ravens defense. Ray Lewis and the crew have to be
salivating at the mouth to see Clemens aka “Fresh Meat” on the other side of the ball.
Pick: Ravens

Chiefs vs. Bears
LJ struggled against the Texans. I can’t think of a word to use for his outlook against the Bears defense that held LT to 25 yards. The Chiefs look bad on both sides of the ball.
Pick: Bears

Raiders vs. Broncos
The Raiders looked decent against the Lions but its hard to gauge anything from that game. With more uncertainty at the QB position, they don’t really have much of a chance against the Broncos. Denver looks like a legitimate Super Bowl contender and look very solid on both sides of the ball.
Pick: Broncos

Chargers vs. Patriots
The Rematch. Is it too early to deem a game as a “must win”? If the Chargers are to be taken seriously, they must win these kind of games. There has to be some distraction within the Patriots lockeroom after the attention given to their spy tactics. It will be interesting to see how effective Belichick’s halftime adjustments will be given his inability to know the defenses signals. I’m a gambler, but I’m not crazy. My money is on the Brady Bunch. He has too many receiving threats and the Patriots will figure out some way to limit LT to 3 TDs. I still don’t understand how the Chargers continue to think they can get by with virtually no wideout targets for Rivers.
Pick: Patriots

Redskins vs. Eagles
The Eagles need to bounce back from a dismal Week 1, while the Redskins just narrowly pulled off a win. The Redskins have a proven defense, but plenty of uncertainty on the offensive side of the ball. Look for the Eagles to try and rattle Jason Campbell and burn Fred Smoot every chance they get.
Pick: Eagles

Byes: None.
Last Week: 11-5
Overall: 11-5
