Fantasy Football Week 1 Wrap-up

Filed under: Fantasy Football — Drew @ 10:29 pm

Well, to say that I had a bad week would be an understatement. Going into the week, I didn’t feel great about my teams. I finished 1-3. The only team that won was Team #1 as listed in my previous post, Fantasy Football Rosters. How well did your teams fair?

Here are some of my observations from Week 1:

Quarterback Busts:

  • Drew Brees - This is the leader of a Top 3 NFL offense and he only managed to put up 192 yards to go with his 2 ints. This game was played on Thursday which put many people in the hole early.
  • Damon Huard - Huard is not thought of in the same light as a Drew Brees, but he did manage to put up solid number when he was at the helm for most of last season. His 168 yard, 2 int performance against the less than stellar Houston Texans defense has to have Herm Edward wishing for Trent Green.

Running Back Disappointments:

  • LT, Steven Jackson, Larry Johnson and Frank Gore were arguably the top 4 backs of every fantasy football draft. They combined to register 181 yards, 2 fumbles, and 3 TDs. Outside of the fumbles, this was a day in the office for LT himself last year. I feel OK about LT and Gore, but I am very concerned about LJ and Jackson. The KC offense looks just a bleak with LJ as it did without him and the injury to Pace has to have a negative effect on Jackson’s production.
  • Ronnie Brown - Is it too early to label this draft class of early running backs a bust? Brown, Cadillac and Cedric Benson are not fairing to well. Brown put up an abysmal 32 yards. This is not good for a consensus 2 round pick

Wide Receivers that flew the coup:

  • Mark Clayton and Deion Branch - Did they even make the trip to the game? 0 yards.
  • Roy Williams - 20 yards and 1TD is not good for a Pro Bowl wideout. Calvin Johnson is supposed to help the offense, not just change the name on the ticket to Hawaii.

Pleasant Surprises:

  • Jay Cutler - Looks like Shannahan may have made the right decision by giving him the keys to the car.
  • Edge, Portis and Lynch - All looked the complete opposite of their production during the preseason. It would be nice to see Edge return to his Colt form.
  • Randy Moss, Ronald Curry, and Chris Chambers - Each looked like they are ready to have a big season. My expectations for Curry have been tempered a bit with the new QB concerns, but hopefully Culpepper add fuel to this fire.
  • Indy and Green Bay - Most thought that the Indy defense would suffer with all of the off season change, including yours truly, but Tony Dungy proved why his is the captain of this ship. His cover 2 defense can easily replace the corners but an injury to Bob Sanders would be a huge setback. The Packers all but shutdown the above average offense of the Eagles. This Pack D is young and could be one of the best defenses to surround Favre during his tenure.

What took you by surprise during Week 1?
