Nostradamus Picks - Week 3

Filed under: NFL Weekly Picks, NFL — Drew @ 3:02 pm

Nostradamus

Last week was horrible for me. Not only did the Browns knock me out of 3 Survivor Football Leagues, but I also got killed by Carson Palmer in Fantasy Football. Week 3 is a welcome site.

Cardinals vs. Ravens
The Ravens still looks pretty bad on offense, but they seemed a bit better with Kyle Boller under center. It appears that McNair is back this week. The Cardinals got a good win last week, but don’t expect a streak to start. Edge will finally hit a road block.
Pick: Ravens

49ers vs. Steelers
The 49ers are living up to their preseason hype. Unfortunately, they lost Manny Lawson for the season, but they should be able to maintain. The key issue with this team right now is the play of Alex Smith. Norv Turner’s departure has significantly effected his production. Although, I can see the 49ers defense making a game of it, I don’t think they have enough to stop the Steeler offense. Smith could be in for a long day.
Pick: Steelers

Lions vs. Eagles
As much as I would like to see McNabb and the Eagles get back on track, I can’t pick against my Lions. Their offense looks as good on the field as they look on paper and the defense has played very solid. This will be the Lions first test, but one that I believe they will pass. The Lions are built to contain teams that have a short passing game like the Eagles.
Pick: Lions

Is Donovan McNabb Just a Good “Black” Quarterback?

Filed under: NFL — Drew @ 9:42 pm

Donovan McNabb

I am sure that by now you have read all of the stories, heard all of the interviews and maybe have even watched the Real Sports Interview with Philadelphia Eagles QB Donovan McNabb. Now that the story has been digested, regurgitated and digested again, I am going to add my two cents.

I have read everything from McNabb being a whiney baby to questions about him playing the “race card”. All of which I find quit ignorant. People, McNabb is one of the more intelligent QBs in the entire NFL. Do you really think would feel this way and make these statements just for the sake of publicity? I have never stepped foot on any level of football playing field, but I can sympathize with McNabb’s train of thought. Follow me.

McNabb’s key point in this segment of his interview simply dealt with the “fact” that black quarterbacks have to work harder to prove themselves. In my opinion, this is not only true in football, but in almost every walk of life. And the consensus amongst football America is that the quarterback position is by far the toughest position to play. It is the only position where you are judged not only by your athletic ability, but almost as equally judged on your intellect. My take from the interview is that he believes African American quarterbacks are generally judged as not having the “proper” mechanics to play quarterback and the oh so popular insult of not being “smart” enough to be a quarterback. So, McNabb’s take is that not only do African American quarterbacks have to prove that they can use their athletic ability to make plays, but they also have to prove that they are smart of enough. Thus, they have to work a little harder than their Caucasian counterparts.

Nostradamus Fantasy Sleepers - Week 2

Filed under: Fantasy Football — Drew @ 9:29 pm

Quarterback:

  • Brett Favre - The Giants poor excuse for a secondary allowed Tony Romo to throw 4 TD passes. The ole man still has something left in the tank. While all the preseason talk has been about the up and coming 49ers, if this Packers team can develop a consistent rushing attack, they will be a force this season.
  • Kyle Boller - Kyle did everything possible to win the game against the Bengals. If Todd Heap didn’t drop that TD pass, Boller would have been deemed a Hero. Tom Brady was able to pick apart the Jets secondary and faced little or no pressure. Sure the Ravens offense isn’t as high powered as the Patriots, but if you are in a pinch, Boller’s your guy.

Nostradamus Picks - Week 2

Filed under: NFL Weekly Picks, NFL — Drew @ 2:37 pm

Nostradamus

Well, I didn’t get off to a good start. I gambled with a couple of picks that didn’t pay off. Both the Dolphins and Redskins looked like they were playing for the Toilet Bowl Championship and well, Joey was Joey. Here are my Week 2 picks:

Texans vs. Panthers
Last week’s game against the Chiefs was a bit of a role reversal. The Texans looked like the team that belonged in the NFL.
The Panthers were also a bit of a surprise. They shutdown the high powered offense of the Rams and abused their lackluster
defense. Maybe since their bandwagon is virtually empty this part of the season, they can fly under the radar. I think Texans will be competitive in most of their games this year, but unless Delhomme reverts back to last year’s form, the Panthers should take this match up. This should be tougher than last weeks victory over the Rams, the Texans defense looks like the best in their franchise’s short history.
Pick: Panthers

Bengals vs. Browns
Copy-N-Paste from last week. “It’s the Browns. Until they prove other wise, that’s all the logic I need.”
Pick: Bengals

Falcons vs. Jaguars
I was shocked at the sick rushing stats that the Titans put up on the Jags. Then I saw that they ran around the edges. There is no way to run up the middle on that defense. For the Falcons to have a chance, Norwood will have to have a HUGE day and Harrington will have to protect the ball. Well, the first of those two items is possible to happen. Garrard had a good game and the Taylor/Jones-Drew combo will look to bounce back.
Pick: Jaguars

The Home Depot NFL Neighborhood MVP

Filed under: News — Drew @ 5:01 pm

Yahoo Survival Football

The NFL and Home Depot have teamed up to launch a great community outreach program in which 17 players will be rewarded, one for each week of the regular season, with a football field refurbishment or a playground built in their NFL team’s local market and a donation to the charity of their choice.

At the end of the year, one player will be honored as The Home Depot NFL Neighborhood MVP of the Year. The MVP of the Year will receive a $25,000 donation to the charity of his choice and will be recognized during Super Bowl® XLII week. The MVP will be selected through a national consumer voting contest and by a Blue Ribbon Panel of judges; online fan voting and the Blue Ribbon Panel will each constitute 50 percent of the total vote.

Through this program, The Home Depot has teamed with United Way® to also recognize consumers who are making a positive impact in their local communities. Consumers can nominate themselves or a neighbor for a chance to be honored as the Consumer Neighborhood MVP at www.homedepot.com/NFL. Nominations will be accepted through Dec. 31, 2007.

I really appreciate when celebrities give back to the community. You don’t have to be a celebrity to make a difference. Please help the United Way®, Home Depot and the NFL.

The Ultimate Office Pool….. Survival Football

Filed under: Survival Football — Drew @ 3:10 pm

Yahoo Survival Football

Thankfully, a friend of mine introduced me to Survival Football last year. I loved the concept and being a football junkie, I jumped at the chance to play. The season went well, I finished tied and thus split the prize. For those of you that are not familiar with Survival or Survivor Football, here is a quick overview.

Each week everyone in the league picks a team that they believe will win. If your team wins, you live to pick the following week, but if your team loses, you’re out. (Some leagues allow you to buy back in if you lose the first week.) This continues each week until there is one player remaining. Unless multiple players lose during the last week. In that case, the players usually just split the prize. The catch to this Pick’em game is that you can only choose a team once during the course of the season. So, if you pick the Colts for Week 1, then you cannot pick the Colts for the rest of the season. This makes for some very interesting strategy. My friends and I are using Yahoo’s Survival Football site.

I am in 3 different leagues. You can guess that if my team loses, I am shot in each league. I have a feeling that I will make the same pick for each location. Do you see any flaws with this tactic? Anyway, for Week 1 I picked the Steelers to demolish, I mean beat the Browns. Needless to say I survived Week 1. I’ll give you one guess as to which team I am picking for Week 2. I’ll let you in on my strategy, but you have to keep it a secret. OK, here you go. Take a look at an NFL schedule. Find the Browns. Look at their opponent and make the selection. Pretty simple, eh. LOL. The Browns look like an all around bad team. Of course they will win, but hopefully it won’t be this week. Go Cincy!!!

For those of you that are in a Survival Football league, who are you picking for Week 2?

Bill Belichick’s Apology

Filed under: News — Drew @ 1:24 pm

Here is footage of the press conference after Bill Belichick issueed an apology for “misinterpreting” the NFL’s video tapping rules. Hmmm. I’m not a genius and have no idea of the verbiage in the rule, but I would bet anything that in no way did the NFL think it would be OK for teams to video tape their opponents play signals. Call me crazy.

I think that Belichick deserves at least a 4 game suspension. Maybe him and Rodney Harrison can tailgate. LOL. What punishment do you think is fair?

America’s Team is busted for cheating. Very Un-Patriotic

Filed under: News — Drew @ 10:47 pm

ESPN and many other media outlets have confirmed that the “NFL Determines Patriots Violated League Rules” In my opinion this is almost as horrific as a rogue NBA referee determining the outcome of a basketball game. Bill Belichick is arguably deemed as one of the best coaches of all time, but after this revelation, that title will have to be revoked. But one thing that is certain he and many other coaches in the league are smart enough to counterpunch an opponent given that you know where he plans to strike. I hope Roger Goodell punishes the Patriots to the maximum of his power. I am still in shock.

Do they miss Charlie Weiss, Romeo Crennel and Eric Mangini that much? Given that this cheating is just being revealed, I am assuming that those coaches were not aware of these video tactics. Sad. Sad. Rodney Harrison on drugs and the camera man cheating for the coach. Were we too early in placing the Patriots Organization on the pedestal?
